Tips and Policies to Support Safe Social Media Use
 
Explore social media policies and security tips for protecting students’ privacy and data when using blogs, wikis, Twitter, Facebook, and other online sites.
Perry D. Drake offers tips to enjoy the educational potential of social media while being mindful of FERPA guidelines. Included are six rules for classroom social media engagement, as well as the two most important things to keep in mind when using any type of social media with students.
Kevin Smith suggests four steps to mitigate potential FERPA and educational records issues when using social media in the classroom.
Jessy Irwin provides five tips for protecting data in social media accounts including: don’t change passwords until vulnerable sites are fixed, don’t access Web sites through email links, and use password managers to generate and store more secure passwords.
 
Sarah Brooks describes the key considerations for safe use of social media tools including: clearly-articulated privacy policies and the use of education-specific alternatives to mass market social media tools.
 
Katie Lepi provides a sample template for the creation of a K-12 acceptable use policy that incorporates social media.
 
Social Media Guidance for Teachers – UW-Stout
UW-Stout’s social media guidelines provide six key areas for faculty to share with students, including: safe posting outside the learning management system, protection of personal information, and indication of planned social media use within the syllabus.
 
 
Tech Tip: Create Quick Video Presentations and Tutorials with Movenote
Movenote is an excellent free online tool that allows students and faculty to easily create video-narrated slide presentations for flipped, blended, and online classes.
